When time is money
Panalpina has grown over the last few years to one of the leading logistics company in the Caspian Area and in particular in Azerbaijan. It considers Baku as a strategic important hub in its distribution concept for the neighbouring countries. Some three years ago an Oil Major has awarded Panalpina Azerbaijan a challenging logistic contract for the delivery of 30,000 tonnes of cargo from all over the world to Baku for the development of a major offshore gas field development project. The project infrastructure comprised the offshore platform, located in 100-metre deep water, used for drilling and production and also provides employee accommodation. Additional floating installations for drill core and gas analysis are supplemented by pipelines to the coastal terminals. The huge volumes of material had to be delivered exactly in accordance with the assembly and construction schedules, which required seamless organization of good flows. This was all the more critical since the cargo was procured from production plants around the globe using all kinds of different carriers - and, for climate reasons, not all the transport routes were navigable or passable all the time. All of these factors, and the tight timeframe involved, meant that logistics was particularly crucial. Intelligent logistics solutions were the key to success, and Panalpina played a pivotal role in this. Being experienced in cargo transportation via Russian River System, via Iran or Georgia, Panalpina has provided its client with reliable services such as but not limited to: Shipment consolidation by truck from its European hubs to Baku; door-to-door logistics and material management; full truck loads; consolidation by air freight and full charters; ocean freight; railway transportation; customs clearance; local delivery and distribution as well as transportation and technical guidance for heavy lifts or out-of-gauge equipment.

Panalpina Central Asia has made major investment in the course of the last two years into the design and building of two special type RO/RO semi-submersible ice-class barges called Beluga and Beluga 2, the purchase of four 500hp prime movers and of 44 hydraulic axle lines, the re-enforcement of Lotos shipyard in Astrakhan as a heavy lift trans-shipment point, the construction of a RO/RO jetty on the Ural river, the building of a public access road connecting its jetty in Atyrau to the main road, the rising of high-tension power-lines and the mobilization of a large quantity of auxiliary materials. The Beluga Barges can operate in the Caspian, Baltic and Northern Seas, in rivers and shallow waters and in support of offshore drilling platforms. The acquisition and deployment of its own equipment in the area, the in-house expertise and an exemplary "deliver on time" record, manifest the bench-mark position of Panalpina as a provider of specialized transport solutions to the Oil & Gas industry in the Caspian Region.
