    Caspian Energy analytical group

Russia: one of the perspective areas To Russia, the Caspian Sea represents just one of a number of oil&gas regions. The Russian sector of the sea has largely been unexplored and its oil majors have instead placed emphasis on efforts to exploit the existing fields in Western Siberia, which has a well-developed system of infrastructure in place. This was caused by the absence of modern technologies during the Soviet period allowing hydrocarbon production in ecologically sensitive areas of the Caspian Sea. Therefore, foreign investment in the Russian oil industry is concentrated so far on Sakhalin Island and the Russian Arctic as well as Western Siberia. Eastern Siberia is emerging into focus as the government seeks to license new oil fields and develop the region, but the Caspian region is already in the interest sector of Russian companies.
